Energy
I’m interested in knowing what the energy is like in Merida or in any part of Mexico where you’re living or plan to relocate to. Thanks
Electricity or the 'Vibe' of the city?
The energy of the people, meaning is it happier than the US. I feel like it’s more depressing and stressful in the IS because of events that are beyond the communities control
Well... it's a city of 1.5 million people with all sorts of vibes. Generally, it's a conservative and family-oriented city. The cultural events tend to revolve around music and maya history and are in centro where the tourists are. Mexicans tend to be appreciative for what they have and very loving of family with lots of family parties, but there is a definite strata of haves and have nots. Women still face a lot of struggles; the patriarchy is alive and well. The expats/snowbirds have a different interests than most of us who are full-time immigrants building lives here. If you're looking for a place with a more arty vibe or nightlife, Oaxaca or San Miguel de Allende might be a good fit.
Hi Denise, I have lived outside the Periferico and now live inside. Although the barrios are different because of what conveniences, markets and restaurants are near by, the people in both neighborhoods are as nice, generous and helpful as can be. I find it incredible that despite my very little Spanish, I have been welcomed and included as part of the barrio. I think people here are just happier. They are not rushing around and don’t believe in being stressed. I always see people smiling and holding hands with their friends and family. In my experience Mérida is a slower and much more peaceful place to live.
I do not have a car but do travel by my electric bike and have found it to be a great and inexpensive way to get where I want to go. There are so many people on pedal bikes, electric bikes, motorcycles, etc here that it seems safer on a bike here than in the US because cars are used to looking out for bikes.
Thanks this is helpful. I’m looking for a pace that is slower and I definitely plan on walking and using a bike to travel.
charisma dixon The pace in Merida is definitely slower and more laid back... It was soooo laid back it took me about a year to adjust to the slower pace... I'm better for it now :)
