6-hr block would be sufficient … While you’re doing your research, check out Progreso (it’s 25 minutes from Merida). We often make trips there to watch the sunset or to get seafood. There are affordable rentals out there if beach life is something on your mind. Plenty of foreigners live there as they must have the beach, lol. We can definitely check that area out as well.
